  14. This file contains information for using the  KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug-In Module 
  15. (Plug In) included with your copy of Adobe Photoshop¬ Version 3.0 for the Macintosh.

  17. Although Adobe Photoshop Version 3.0 requires System 7,  the KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug In will operate with Adobe Photoshop Version 2.5.1 under Apple System Software Version 6.0.7. Adobe Systems and Kodak recommend using System 7 
  18. or higher for optimal performance.

  20. DESCRIPTION

  22. The KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug In is a file format module designed for use with Adobe Photoshop 2.5.1 or greater for the Macintosh. Included with the Plug In are high-fidelity Source and Destination Precision Transforms.

  24. The Plug In opens images stored in Kodak's Photo CD Image Pac format and
  25. reads Photo YCC data from the disc through the KODAK PRECISION 
  26. Color Management System (CMS). The CMS delivers accurate image quality for 
  27. color editing and reproduction with Adobe Photoshop.

  29. INSTALLATION
  30.  
  31. The Plug In is automatically installed with a full or custom installation of the 
  32. Adobe Photoshop application.  Refer to the Adobe Photoshop User's Guide for more 
  33. information on installation requirements.

  35. The KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug In distribution includes:

  37. Ñ Kodak CMS Photo CD - KODAK CMS Photo CD Image File Plug-In Module
  38. Ñ Kodak Precision CP, CP1, CP2  - Color Processor Components 
  39. Ñ CMSCP Folder - Holds System Transforms used by Color Processor 
  40. Ñ KPCMS Folder - Holds Precision Transforms

  42. The Kodak CMS Photo CD Plug In is stored in the Adobe Photoshop Plug-ins Folder. The current version is 3.0.D, created Mar. 30, 1994.

  44. The KODAK PRECISION CP, CP1, CP2 Color Processor Components are copied to the Extensions Folder of your boot disk's System Folder.

  46. The CMSCP folder, containing nine files (CP01, CP02, CP03, CP04, CP05, CP07, CP08, CP09, CP10, CP10i), is copied to the startup disk's System Folder.

  48. The KPCMS folder containing five files (adobergb.pt, pslabexp.pt, phcdcn01.pt, phcdko01.pt, phcdek01.pt) is copied to the boot disk's System Folder.

  50. If necessary, you can reinstall the KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug In using the Customize option of the Adobe Photoshop Installer utility. See the Adobe Photoshop User's Guide for more information.

  52. USING THE PLUG IN
  53.  
  54. Follow these steps to use the Kodak CMS Photo CD Plug In:
  55.  
  56. 1.     Open Adobe Photoshop.
  57. 2.     Select Open... from the File Menu.
  58. 3.     Select a Photo CD image from within the Images folder (stored within the 
  59. Photo CD folder) and click Open. The Plug In searches the KPCMS database for available Precision Transforms. The KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug in dialog appears and displays a thumbnail of the selected image.
  60. 4.     Select options in the KODAK CMS Photo CD Plug In dialog box as described below. Click OK. The color-corrected image opens in Adobe  Photoshop.

  62. ABOUT THUMBNAIL IMAGE DISPLAY
  63.  
  64. The Plug In displays a small thumbnail representation of the selected image. Retrieve thumbnail images from the OVERVIEW.PCD;1 file, located on the Photo CD disc. If you copied Photo CD image files to a disk or folder without a corresponding OVERVIEW.PCD;1 file, no thumbnail displays. With images from multiple disks in the same folder with only one OVERVIEW.PCD;1 file, a thumbnail that does not match the actual image might display (they are keyed by image number). Although this is incorrect, Plug In performance or operation is unaffected.

  66. ABOUT IMAGE INFO

Use the Image Info option to obtain additional information about the image. The Product Type of Original: information describes the film term applied by the PIW operator as Universal E6, Universal K14, or Color Negative. This information helps you choose the appropriate Source PT to color manage your Photo CD device.

  70. The following fields indicate:
  71.  
  72. Medium of Original - if the source image was a negative or slide (reversal) and if it was color or B&W.
  73.  
  74. Product Type of Original - the specific film term selected by the PIW operator when scanning the original, displayed in alpha/numeric code.
  75.  
  76. Scanner Vendor - lists the manufacturer of the PIW (typically Kodak)..
  77.  
  78. Scanner Product - lists the scanner model used to scan the image. Some Photo CD Sampler discs may not include this information, resulting in a blank field.

  80. ABOUT OPTIONS
  81.  
  82. The Plug In specifies both Source and Destination for color conversion from Photo YCC to an Adobe Photoshop color space. The color reversal Precision Transforms supplied with the Plug In preserve original image integrity.

  84. Use the Plug In with Kodak Precision Device Color Profiles (DCPs) - collections of Precision Transforms available for a variety of common devices. Additional Precision Transforms may be available in the future for different film types as well as for rendering purposes.

  86. Resolution - this pull-down menu allows you to select the resulting resolution of the Photo CD image when opened in Adobe Photoshop (the default is the BASE Photo CD image resolution; units are in pixels). The resulting file size of the selected resolution displays.

  88. Source - the Source option allows you to select from input-type Precision Transforms for a specific Photo CD image. These Precision Transforms maximize color range and fidelity for graphic arts applications.

The Kodak Photo CD Device Color Profile (DCP) included with the  Plug In contains three emulsion choices: Universal Ektachrome V2.0, Universal Kodachrome V2.0, and Photo CD Color Negative V2.0. Each is a Precision Transform matched to the most typically used Universal film terms. The film term is identified by the Medium of Original and Product Type of Original from the Image Info box.

If the Medium of Original is Color Reversal and the film term is unknown, use the Universal Ektachrome V2.0 PT. The Universal Kodachrome V2.0 PT is only intended for use with the Kodachrome K-14 film processing process. For best results, direct the photo processing lab to use the Ektachrome Universal E-6 film term for all types of slide originals other than Kodachrome. Custom Source profiles can be generated using KODAK PRECISION Input Color Characterization Software (ICC) available from Kodak's CMS Group at 800-75COLOR (752-6567).

  100. Destination - the Destination option allows you to select an output-type Precision Transforms for a specific monitor, printer, or proofer color space.

The Adobe Photoshop RGB Precision Transform opens the image in RGB color format. The Adobe Photoshop CIELAB Precision Transform opens the image into a color LAB Mode. Optional Destination Precision Transforms for direct conversion to CMYK are available from Kodak: call Kodak at 800-75COLOR (752-6567) for a current listing of available profiles.

  104. Landscape Check box - this option, when checked, disables the rotation of images currently stored in a portrait orientation. Rotation can slow down the conversion. They will be opened in Adobe Photoshop in the landscape orientation where they can be rotated back to portrait, if necessary.

  106. To open a Photo CD image, you must select a Resolution and a Source and Destination Precision Transform. Click OK to color manage image color. The image displays in the Adobe Photoshop mode that corresponds to the selected Destination Precision Transform.

  108. APPLICATION NOTES

  110. When opening an image in Adobe Photoshop LAB mode, Adobe Photoshop's monitor preferences' Ambient Light option should be set at HIGH for optimal image fidelity.

  112. The Plug In recognizes a KODAK PRECISION CTE Accelerator board or compatible accelerator (DayStar Charger with KODAK CMS option) and, when properly configured, uses it to speed the transformation process.
